ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A man accused of killing a New Mexico nun has been found competent to stand trial.
Federal Judge William Johnson made the ruling Wednesday after a nearly daylong hearing in Albuquerque.
Prosecutors presented a mental health expert who testified that Reehahlio Carroll had lied during a psychiatric examination to appear incompetent.
Carroll is accused of killing 64-year-old Sister Marguerite Bartz with a flashlight after she caught him breaking into her trailer home on the Navajo Indian reservation.
Carroll was 18 when the crime happened in 2009. He has pleaded not guilty.
Bartz served at St. Berard Catholic Church in the community of Navajo.
