Sheriff: No rush on state charges in Ariz shooting

TUCSON, Ariz. – The suspect in Saturday's mass shooting in Arizona makes his initial court appearance in federal court on Monday in Phoenix, while state charges have yet to be filed.

Authorities say 22-year-old Jared Loughner (LAWF'-nuhr) killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

He is charged with one count of attempted assassination of a member of Congress, two counts of killing an employee of the federal government and two counts of attempting to kill a federal employee.

Pima (PEE'-muh) County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik (DOOP'-nik) says state charges will also be filed.

He says the county attorney's office will file them on recommendation from his office.

Dupnik says there's no rush because Loughner is in custody.
