STREAMING DATE CONFIRMED
Supergirl Lands on HBO Max September 10
Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that Supergirl will debut globally on HBO Max on September 10.
The move brings one of DC Studios’ major 2026 theatrical releases onto the streaming service following its summer cinema run.
For audiences who have been waiting for the home streaming release rather than heading to the cinema, the wait is now almost over.
KARA ZOR-EL
Milly Alcock Leads a Very Different DC Adventure
Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El in the film, following her previous appearance as the character in the new DC Universe.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl draws inspiration from Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series.
The story sends Kara on an interstellar journey after she reluctantly joins forces with an unexpected companion, taking the character far beyond the traditional superhero setting.
Alcock leads a cast that also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham and Jason Momoa.
FROM CINEMAS TO STREAMING
Supergirl’s Theatrical Run Fell Short of Expectations
The HBO Max release follows a difficult theatrical run for Supergirl.
According to Variety, the film opened with $37.1 million in North America and $62.6 million globally before finishing its theatrical run with approximately $126 million worldwide.
DC Studios co-head Peter Safran later acknowledged that the movie did not meet the studio’s box-office expectations, while stressing that it remained part of DC’s broader long-term strategy.
Its arrival on HBO Max now gives the film an opportunity to reach a much larger home audience as the new DC Universe continues to expand.
WHAT’S NEXT
The New DC Universe Keeps Moving Forward
Supergirl followed 2025’s Superman as another major entry in the rebooted DC Universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
While its theatrical performance may not have matched expectations, Kara Zor-El remains part of a much larger interconnected slate of DC projects.
For now, anyone who missed Milly Alcock’s first solo outing as Supergirl won’t have long to wait.
Supergirl begins streaming on HBO Max on September 10.
