Biography

About Adam Scott

Adam Scott has built a career around a particularly useful tension: he can seem reassuringly ordinary while suggesting that something more anxious, prickly or strange is happening underneath. That quality has served him across broad comedy, independent film and increasingly prominent dramatic television. Born in Santa Cruz, California, on April 3, 1973, Scott graduated from Harbor High School and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. His early screen work included Hellraiser: Bloodline, Star Trek: First Contact, High Crimes, The Aviator and The Matador, alongside television appearances in Boy Meets World, Party of Five, Murder One and Six Feet Under. His first regular series role came in HBO’s Tell Me You Love Me in 2007. Scott has credited Step Brothers, in which he played the spectacularly smug Derek Huff, with helping shift his career from drama toward comedy. That turn led to two of his defining television roles. In Party Down, he played Henry Pollard, the weary actor working for a catering company; the series was later revived in 2023 with Scott returning. He then joined Parks and Recreation as Ben Wyatt, arriving as a state auditor before becoming a central figure in the ensemble through the show’s 2015 conclusion. His film work during that period showed considerable range. He starred as Caleb Sinclaire in The Vicious Kind, earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actor, and appeared in Friends with Kids, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Overnight and Krampus. His television roles have likewise moved easily between tones, from Trevor in The Good Place to Ed Mackenzie in Big Little Lies. In 2022, Scott began starring in and executive producing Severance. His performance brought Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2022 and 2025, while his work as an executive producer also contributed to Outstanding Drama Series nominations in those years. It is a fitting showcase for what Scott does especially well: making restraint, discomfort and quiet uncertainty compelling to watch.
