Biography

About Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried has built a career around range: broad comedy, musicals, thrillers, period drama and television, often bringing an alert, open quality to characters whose apparent simplicity hides something more complicated. Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on December 3, 1985, Seyfried began modeling at eight. She studied singing, took vocal lessons, trained with a Broadway coach and appeared in high school theater before moving into daytime television. Recurring roles on As the World Turns and All My Children gave her an early screen education, but her film breakthrough came as Karen Smith in Mean Girls (2004). Seyfried’s guileless delivery made Karen much more than a standard sidekick, and she shared the MTV Movie Award for Best On-Screen Team with Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Lacey Chabert. Television remained important to her early career. She appeared as Lilly Kane in Veronica Mars, largely through flashbacks, and played Sarah Henrickson in HBO’s Big Love. Her first leading film role arrived with Mamma Mia! (2008), where her singing background and bright screen presence fit naturally into the musical’s romantic sweep. She later returned as Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Seyfried has rarely stayed in one lane. Jennifer’s Body gave her a sharper, more anxious role as Needy Lesnicki, while Chloe, Dear John, Letters to Juliet, Red Riding Hood and In Time placed her across thrillers, romances and speculative drama. She played Cosette in Les Misérables, Linda Lovelace in Lovelace and provided the voice of Daphne Blake in Scoob! Two later performances underline the depth of that range. As Marion Davies in David Fincher’s Mank, Seyfried received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. As Elizabeth Holmes in the limited series The Dropout, she delivered a more controlled and unsettling transformation, winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress. From deceptively airy comedy to tightly wound drama, Seyfried’s best work depends on her ability to shift the temperature of a scene without losing the audience’s attention.
