Biography

About Andy Garcia

Andy Garcia has built a screen career around composure, intensity and a knack for suggesting that polished characters may be carrying more than they reveal. Born Andrés Arturo García Menéndez in Havana, Cuba, on April 12, 1956, he moved with his family to Miami at the age of five. He attended Miami Beach Senior High School and later graduated from Florida International University, where he began acting before heading to Hollywood. After early television appearances in Hill Street Blues and Murder, She Wrote, Garcia found his breakthrough in Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables in 1987. Ridley Scott’s Black Rain followed, but his defining early role came as Vincent Mancini in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part III. Playing the illegitimate son of Sonny Corleone placed Garcia inside one of American cinema’s most closely watched families, and his performance earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for supporting actor. He became the first Cuban performer nominated for an acting Oscar. Throughout the 1990s, Garcia moved between crime pictures, thrillers and character-driven dramas. Internal Affairs gave him a battle of wits with Richard Gere’s corrupt police officer, while When a Man Loves a Woman cast him as the husband of Meg Ryan’s Alice. Night Falls on Manhattan, Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead and Hoodlum further established how naturally he could inhabit worlds shaped by ambition, loyalty and compromised morality. Garcia brought a cooler, more playfully imposing presence to Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven as casino owner Terry Benedict, returning for Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen. His work has also extended behind the camera: he produced and starred in For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, then co-wrote, directed and starred in The Lost City. Later roles have shown a lighter side without losing his characteristic gravity. In 2018 he appeared in Book Club and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and in 2022 he starred opposite Gloria Estefan in Father of the Bride. Across crime dramas, capers, romances and comedies, Garcia remains an actor especially comfortable when charm and authority occupy the same frame.
