Ben Barnes

Ben Barnes has built a career around characters whose polished surfaces rarely tell the whole story. A British actor and singer with roots in music and theatre, he began performing with the National Youth Music Theatre at sixteen, appearing as a drummer in the West End musical adaptation of Bugsy Malone. He later studied drama and English literature at Kingston University, graduating with first-class honours in 2004. That combination of theatrical training, musical instinct and literary interest has followed Barnes onto the screen. After early television work and a role in the West End production of The History Boys, he made his feature debut as the young Dunstan Thorn in Stardust. Wider recognition arrived when he played Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, a role that required two months of riding and stunt preparation in New Zealand. He returned as King Caspian in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Barnes soon moved between romantic comedy, literary adaptation and fantasy. He starred opposite Jessica Biel and Colin Firth in Easy Virtue, singing three songs from its jazz-age soundtrack, before taking the title role in Dorian Gray. Later film work included Killing Bono, The Words, The Big Wedding, By the Gun, Seventh Son and Jackie & Ryan, where he played guitarist and singer Ryan Brenner. Television gave Barnes room to explore more openly compromised figures. In Westworld, he played Logan Delos, an uninhibited businessman tied to the park’s early development. In The Punisher, his Billy Russo combined vanity and ambition with a damaged past; Barnes consulted his psychotherapist parents while preparing to portray the character’s mental health struggles. He then brought charm and uncertainty to Gold Digger before stepping into another major fantasy role as General Kirigan, also known as the Darkling, in Shadow and Bone. Across stage, film and television, Barnes has repeatedly found roles that make use of the contrast between charm and danger. His musical background remains part of that range, giving his career a thread that runs from West End percussion to singers, soldiers, princes and morally unstable men.
