Bruce McGill

Bruce McGill has built a screen career around versatility, moving comfortably between comedy, drama, historical figures and dependable men of authority. Born in San Antonio on July 11, 1950, he graduated from Douglas MacArthur High School before earning a drama degree from the University of Texas at Austin. His best-known early role came as Daniel Simpson “D-Day” Day in the 1978 comedy National Lampoon’s Animal House. McGill brought an eccentric physical touch to the part, including a rendition of the “William Tell Overture” drummed on his windpipe. He later reprised D-Day in the television spin-off Delta House and repeated the windpipe trick on MacGyver, where he had a recurring role as Jack Dalton, the title character’s comical friend, soldier of fortune and bush pilot. That balance of humor and authority has served McGill across an unusually broad range of parts. Director Michael Mann cast him in The Insider, Ali and Collateral, three films that made good use of his grounded, no-nonsense presence. McGill has also played several real people, including Yankees manager Ralph Houk in 61*, diplomat George Ball in Path to War, journalist Peter Arnett in Live from Baghdad, political strategist Mac Stipanovich in Recount, CIA Director George Tenet in W. and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton in Lincoln. Television has been just as central to his work. His appearances include Quantum Leap, Miami Vice, Star Trek: Voyager, Babylon 5, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and NCIS. He also played veteran Boston homicide detective Vince Korsak on Rizzoli & Isles, serving as mentor and friend to Jane Rizzoli. Beyond live action, McGill voiced Lloyd Waterman on The Cleveland Show and Agent Buford in the video game Mercenaries. Whether playing a comic sidekick, a senior official or a seasoned detective, McGill brings weight without making a performance feel heavy. He is also a skilled guitarist, another facet of a career shaped less by one fixed screen identity than by the ability to fit convincingly into many different worlds.
