Biography

About Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis built his screen career on a useful contradiction: he could look completely at home in an action movie while suggesting that his character would rather be anywhere else. That blend of confidence, irritation and dry humor became central to his appeal, particularly as John McClane in Die Hard and its sequels. Born Walter Bruce Willis on March 19, 1955, in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany, he later grew up in Carneys Point, New Jersey. Willis joined his high school drama club and found that performing onstage reduced his stutter. After attending Montclair State University, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a bartender while pursuing acting. His major breakthrough came as David Addison Jr. opposite Cybill Shepherd in Moonlighting. The series established Willis as a comic actor and brought him an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Die Hard then gave that quick, argumentative energy a different setting. McClane was an action hero who bled, complained and improvised, and Willis returned to the role in four sequels over 25 years. His filmography was broader than that signature part suggests. Pulp Fiction placed him inside Quentin Tarantino's intersecting crime story, while 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element and Armageddon moved him through very different forms of science fiction and spectacle. The Sixth Sense drew on a quieter, more restrained side of his presence. He also appeared in Unbreakable and Glass, played an older version of Joe in Looper, and joined the ensembles of Sin City and Moonrise Kingdom. Willis worked beyond live-action film as a voice actor, producer, screenwriter, singer and musician. His television work included an Emmy-winning guest appearance on Friends, and he made his Broadway debut in a 2015 adaptation of Misery. In 2022, his family announced that he was retiring from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia. His career remains defined not only by action, but by the comic timing and guarded vulnerability he carried into it.
