Carla Gugino

Carla Gugino has built a career on range rather than a single defining screen persona. Born on August 29, 1971, in Sarasota, Florida, she worked as a teenage fashion model before taking acting classes at the suggestion of her aunt, Carol Merrill. Early television appearances included The Wonder Years, Who’s the Boss? and Falcon Crest, while films such as Troop Beverly Hills and Son in Law helped establish her on the big screen. Gugino’s work soon began moving freely between genres and formats. She appeared opposite Nicolas Cage in Brian De Palma’s Snake Eyes and played Dr. Gina Simon during the final season of Chicago Hope. In 2001, she became Ingrid Cortez, the capable family matriarch at the heart of Spy Kids, returning for its next two sequels. From there, her film roles ranged from Lucille in Sin City and Sally Jupiter in Watchmen to Night at the Museum, Race to Witch Mountain and San Andreas. Television has given Gugino similarly varied territory. She led the crime drama Karen Sisco and the science-fiction series Threshold, played agent Amanda on Entourage and starred as investigative reporter Susan Berg in the miniseries Political Animals. Even when a series was short-lived, she brought the kind of assured presence that could quickly suggest a character’s history beyond the immediate scene. Her stage career has run alongside that screen work. Gugino made her stage debut in a 1993 production of Of Mice and Men and later appeared on Broadway in Arthur Miller’s After the Fall. Her performance as Abby in Desire Under the Elms earned an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination, and in 2020 she played Carol in Anatomy of a Suicide at the Atlantic Theater Company. Gugino has also occasionally drawn on her musical background, notably singing a duet with Oscar Isaac for Sucker Punch. Across thrillers, family adventures, comic-book adaptations, television dramas and theatre, she has remained an actor comfortable changing register without losing her grounded authority.
