Ciarán Hinds

Ciarán Hinds is a Northern Irish actor whose work moves comfortably between stage, film and television. Born in Belfast on 9 February 1953, he studied law briefly at Queen's University Belfast before leaving to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His professional career began at Glasgow Citizens' Theatre in a 1976 production of Cinderella, establishing the stage foundation that has remained central to his work. Hinds has a particular gift for characters carrying authority, conviction or danger, though he rarely reduces them to a single imposing note. His early screen roles included John Boorman's Excalibur and Captain Frederick Wentworth in the 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion. He later appeared in films as varied as Munich, There Will Be Blood, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, in which he played Aberforth Dumbledore. Television has given him similarly substantial territory. He portrayed Gaius Julius Caesar in Rome, detective James Langton across the Above Suspicion dramas and wildling leader Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones. In Kin, he played drug-trafficking gangster Eamon Cunningham. These roles draw on the steadiness of his presence: Hinds can command a scene without making the performance feel pushed. Theatre has remained a constant alongside that screen career. His credits include Richard III for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Closer in London and on Broadway, The Seafarer, Juno and the Paycock, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Hamlet and The Crucible. For Closer, he received a Theatre World Award for his New York debut and shared an Outer Critics Circle special achievement award with the ensemble. Kenneth Branagh's Belfast brought Hinds back, on screen, to the city of his birth. His performance earned the National Board of Review award for Best Supporting Actor and an Academy Award nomination in the same category. It was fitting recognition for an actor whose work has long depended less on display than on precision, gravity and the sense of a full life continuing beyond the frame.
