Clark Gregg

Clark Gregg brings a calm, dry precision to the screen, the kind of presence that can make a supporting character feel essential without pushing for attention. That quality found its most sustained expression in Agent Phil Coulson, whom Gregg first played in 2008’s Iron Man. He returned for Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers, helping connect the expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe through a character who had begun as a relatively small part. Coulson eventually moved to the center of the story. From 2013 to 2020, Gregg starred in the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., alongside Ming-Na Wen and Chloe Bennet, and directed episodes during its fifth and sixth seasons. He later reprised the role in Captain Marvel and the animated series What If...?, while also starring in Marvel One-Shot short films focused on Coulson. Gregg’s career, however, reaches well beyond that familiar suit and badge. He has appeared in supporting roles in Lovely & Amazing, The Human Stain and In Good Company, as well as guest roles on Will & Grace, Sports Night, Sex and the City and The West Wing. His stage background includes being a founding member and later artistic director of the off-Broadway Atlantic Theater Company. He has also shaped films from behind the camera. Gregg wrote the screenplay for the 2000 thriller What Lies Beneath, then wrote and directed Choke, the 2008 adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel starring Sam Rockwell. His film Trust Me, which he wrote, produced and directed, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013. Born in Boston in 1962, Gregg lived in seven cities by the age of 17. After two years at Ohio Wesleyan University, he moved to Manhattan, worked jobs including security guard and parking valet, and later graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1986. That varied route fits a career defined by range: actor, writer and director, equally at home serving a larger ensemble or steering the story himself.
