Biography

About Demi Moore

Demi Moore has built a career around a compelling tension: composure on the surface, determination and vulnerability moving underneath. Born Demetria Gene Harmon on November 11, 1962, in Roswell, New Mexico, she began working professionally in television before making her film debut in Choices in 1981. Her early run included General Hospital, Blame It on Rio and No Small Affair, but St. Elmo’s Fire brought her widespread recognition in 1985. About Last Night... followed with a more emotionally demanding romantic role and helped move her toward stronger material. Ghost changed the scale of everything. The supernatural romance became the highest-grossing film of 1990, while Moore’s performance earned a Golden Globe nomination and a Saturn Award for Best Actress. During the 1990s, she became one of Hollywood’s most in-demand performers through films including Indecent Proposal and Disclosure. Striptease made her the world’s highest-paid actress at the time, while G.I. Jane asked for a different kind of commitment: Moore shaved her head and completed two weeks of military training to play the first woman undergoing Navy SEAL training. Her work has never been limited to leading film roles. Moore produced and starred in HBO’s abortion anthology If These Walls Could Talk, voiced Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame and later made her directing debut with the short film Streak. After periods away from the screen, she returned in projects ranging from Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle to the financial-crisis drama Margin Call, where her controlled presence fit neatly within a tense ensemble. The Substance gave Moore one of the defining roles of her later career. Playing an aging star who turns to a black-market drug promising youth, she confronted celebrity, vanity and bodily horror with striking openness. The performance won her the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Movie Award and Actor Award for leading actress, and brought Academy Award and BAFTA nominations. Moore’s screen presence has changed with the material, from romantic directness to physical resolve, cool authority and bruised self-awareness. That adaptability—not simply longevity—is what keeps her filmography worth revisiting.
