Diego Luna

Diego Luna has built the kind of career that resists being reduced to one role, one language or even one side of the camera. Born in Toluca de Lerdo in 1979 and raised in Mexico City, he began acting onstage at seven before working in telenovelas and films as a child. Those early years gave him a screen ease that would remain useful as his work moved between intimate Mexican dramas, Hollywood productions and ambitious television. His international breakthrough came with Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también, in which he played Tenoch Iturbide opposite his childhood friend and frequent collaborator Gael García Bernal. The 2001 road movie made Luna internationally known and helped establish the pair as faces of the Nuevo Cine Mexicano movement. Luna followed it with work across Spanish- and English-language cinema, including Nicotina, The Terminal, Mister Lonely, Milk, Casa de mi Padre and Elysium. For a wider global audience, Luna became closely associated with Cassian Andor, the Rebel Alliance intelligence officer introduced in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He later returned to the character in Andor, serving as an executive producer as well as its lead. It is a role well suited to his understated intensity: Luna can make uncertainty, calculation and conviction register without turning them into a speech. His television work has also included two seasons as Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo in Narcos: Mexico and a reunion with García Bernal in La Máquina, which brought Luna a 2025 Golden Globe nomination. Luna’s career has always extended beyond acting. He co-founded Canana Films with García Bernal and Pablo Cruz, later forming La Corriente del Golfo with García Bernal. As a director, his work includes the documentary Chávez, the features Abel, Cesar Chávez and Mr. Pig, and the series Pan y Circo. He has also worked as a producer, screenwriter and television creator. That range feels central to his career: Luna is not simply moving between projects, but taking an active interest in how stories are shaped, produced and brought to an audience.
