Biography

About Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson is an American actor, producer, and former professional wrestler who became one of the world's most recognisable entertainment stars. Born Dwayne Douglas Johnson on 2 May 1972 in Hayward, California, he first gained international fame in professional wrestling as "The Rock" before transitioning into a hugely successful Hollywood career. Johnson grew up surrounded by professional wrestling. His father, Rocky Johnson, was a successful wrestler, while his maternal grandfather, Peter Maivia, was also a prominent figure in the industry. Despite those family connections, Johnson initially pursued a very different sporting career. He played American football and received a scholarship to the University of Miami, where he was part of the school's national championship-winning team. Johnson hoped to pursue professional football, but after his playing career didn't develop as planned, he turned to professional wrestling. Johnson joined WWE, then known as the World Wrestling Federation, during the 1990s. Initially introduced as Rocky Maivia, he was later reinvented as The Rock, developing the confidence, humour and charismatic microphone style that would make him one of wrestling's biggest stars. During WWE's enormously popular Attitude Era, The Rock became a multiple-time world champion and one of the company's defining performers. His rivalries with wrestlers including "Stone Cold" Steve Austin helped make him a mainstream celebrity far beyond wrestling. That popularity eventually opened the door to Hollywood. Johnson appeared as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns (2001). Although the role was relatively small, the character received his own spin-off with The Scorpion King (2002), giving Johnson his first major starring vehicle. Throughout the 2000s, he gradually established himself outside wrestling with films including The Rundown (2003), Walking Tall (2004), Doom (2005), Gridiron Gang (2006), The Game Plan (2007) and Race to Witch Mountain (2009). A major turning point arrived when Johnson joined the Fast & Furious franchise as Luke Hobbs in Fast Five (2011). The relentless Diplomatic Security Service agent initially hunts Dominic Toretto and his crew, then becomes an ally. Johnson returned in Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Furious 7 (2015) and The Fate of the Furious (2017). His character subsequently teamed with Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw for the spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019). Alongside the Fast franchise, Johnson became a reliable leading man for large-scale action and adventure movies. His credits include Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012), Hercules (2014), San Andreas (2015), Central Intelligence (2016), Baywatch (2017), Rampage (2018), Skyscraper (2018) and Jungle Cruise (2021). Johnson also became closely associated with the modern Jumanji films. He starred as Dr Smoulder Bravestone in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) alongside Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan. The film became a major worldwide hit and led to Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). Another of Johnson's best-known performances came through animation when he voiced the demigod Maui in Disney's Moana (2016). The character let him combine comedy, music, and the larger-than-life personality that had been central to his success since his wrestling career. Johnson entered the world of DC superheroes with Black Adam (2022), portraying the powerful antihero after being attached to the character for many years. His film career has been accompanied by extensive work as a producer, with Johnson becoming increasingly involved in developing projects through his production company Seven Bucks Productions. Despite decades in Hollywood, Johnson has never completely separated himself from professional wrestling. He has periodically returned to WWE, and his appearances continue to attract enormous attention from wrestling audiences. Johnson's unusual career has taken him from college football and professional wrestling to action franchises, family entertainment, animation and superhero cinema. Few performers have made the transition from wrestling to mainstream film stardom on a comparable scale. From electrifying wrestling crowds as The Rock to Fast & Furious, Jumanji, Moana, and some of Hollywood's biggest action movies, Dwayne Johnson has become a global entertainment figure whose career spans sport, television, and blockbuster cinema.
