Biography

About Edward Burns

Edward Burns has built a career by moving easily between acting and hands-on independent filmmaking. Born on January 29, 1968, in Woodside, Queens, and raised in Valley Stream on Long Island, he entered the movie business as a production assistant on Oliver Stone's The Doors. That behind-the-scenes start suited the shape his career would take: Burns has repeatedly worked as an actor, writer, director and producer, often on the same project. His breakthrough came with The Brothers McMullen, which he financed, produced, directed and appeared in while working at Entertainment Tonight. Filmed largely in Valley Stream, the movie reached Robert Redford after Burns passed along a copy following an interview. Redford helped it gain acceptance to the Sundance Film Festival, giving Burns the opening for a career rooted in personal, independently made stories. Burns continued that approach with ensemble dramas including She's the One and Sidewalks of New York. As an actor working outside his own films, he appeared in Saving Private Ryan, Life or Something Like It and the crime thriller Confidence. Television brought another side of his screen presence: he played himself in Entourage, appeared in Will & Grace and portrayed Bugsy Siegel in Frank Darabont's Mob City. What distinguishes Burns's career is his persistence in finding leaner ways to make movies. Looking for Kitty was shot in New York City with a tiny crew and a $200,000 budget. Nice Guy Johnny was made for a reported $25,000, while Newlyweds was filmed in 12 days for $9,000 before closing the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. Purple Violets also found an unconventional route to audiences, premiering exclusively on iTunes in 2007. Burns has remained committed to being an independent writer-director rather than simply taking studio assignments. In 2024, he began production in the Republic of Ireland on the golf-based film Finnegan's Foursome, continuing a career defined by resourcefulness both in front of and behind the camera.
