Biography

About Emma Stone

Emma Stone has built a career around a particularly useful tension: she can deliver a joke with sharp precision while letting uncertainty, vulnerability or outright chaos flicker underneath it. Her low, husky voice adds to that distinctive screen presence, but her comic instincts were developed early. Born Emily Jean Stone in Scottsdale, Arizona, on November 6, 1988, she performed in youth theater and improvisational comedy before moving to Los Angeles as a teenager to pursue acting. After early television appearances, Stone made her feature debut in Superbad. Her breakthrough arrived with Easy A, where her dry delivery and underlying warmth made Olive Penderghast more than a standard teen-comedy lead. From there, she moved comfortably between the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, the period drama The Help and the superhero scale of The Amazing Spider-Man, playing Gwen Stacy in two films. Birdman gave Stone a more abrasive dramatic showcase and brought her first Academy Award nomination. La La Land then drew together several strands of her career: comedy, romance, music and the bruising experience of auditioning in Hollywood. Her performance as aspiring actress Mia Dolan earned her the Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award for Best Actress. Stone's collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos have pushed her work in stranger and more physically adventurous directions. She played the scheming Abigail Masham in The Favourite, then starred as Bella in Poor Things, a performance rooted in curiosity, physical comedy and a character discovering the world on her own terms. Stone also produced Poor Things and won her second Academy Award for Best Actress for the film. Her work extends beyond film acting. She has appeared on television and Broadway, taken voice roles in The Croods films and worked as a producer through the company Fruit Tree. Whether operating inside a bright studio comedy or an eccentric period world, Stone tends to find the live wire in a character: the intelligence, awkwardness and appetite that keep the performance moving.
