Biography

About Eric Stonestreet

Eric Stonestreet built his career on comedy, character work and a willingness to go big without losing the details that make a performance click. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, on September 9, 1971, he grew up around his family’s pig farm and discovered performing through an unusual first ambition: becoming a clown. As a child, he created Fizbo and was entertaining younger children at birthday parties by age 11. Years later, the name resurfaced on Modern Family, where Stonestreet periodically played Fizbo and applied the clown makeup himself. Acting arrived through another unexpected route. While studying sociology at Kansas State University, Stonestreet auditioned for Prelude to a Kiss on a dare and landed a small role. He went on to appear in stage productions of All My Sons and Twelfth Night before studying improv at ImprovOlympic and The Second City Training Center in Chicago. He later moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting professionally. His early screen career was assembled through compact film parts and television appearances. He made his film debut as desk clerk Sheldon in Almost Famous and later appeared in The Island, Bad Teacher and Identity Thief. On television, he played Ronnie Litre on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and guest-starred across series including ER, Malcolm in the Middle, The West Wing, Pushing Daisies, Bones, Monk and American Horror Story. Stonestreet’s most acclaimed role came as Cameron Tucker on ABC’s Modern Family. His performance earned two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, while the ensemble received four SAG Awards. He also received three Golden Globe nominations for his work on the show. Beyond scripted roles, Stonestreet has remained connected to live improvisation and has taken on television hosting, including The Toy Box and Domino Masters. It is a career shaped by stage training, guest roles, ensemble comedy and, fittingly, a clown character that followed him from childhood birthday parties to prime-time television.
