Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler has built a screen career around physical conviction, a rough-edged warmth and an appetite for roles that demand total commitment. Born in Paisley, Scotland, on 13 November 1969, he studied law at the University of Glasgow and worked as a trainee lawyer in Edinburgh before changing direction. Acting was not the safe option: after moving to London, he took odd jobs while trying to land roles. His first professional acting work came in Steven Berkoff’s stage production of Coriolanus, followed by the role of Renton in a theatrical adaptation of Trainspotting. Butler made his film debut in Mrs Brown in 1997, then took smaller parts in Tomorrow Never Dies and Tale of the Mummy before playing Attila the Hun in the television miniseries Attila and Count Dracula in Dracula 2000. That early range became a feature of his career. Butler could bring romantic feeling to Dear Frankie and P.S. I Love You, swagger through Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla, or step into the demanding title role of The Phantom of the Opera. With little previous musical experience beyond singing in a rock band during his law-student years, he took singing lessons before auditioning for the film. His breakthrough as a major action presence came with 300, in which he played Spartan King Leonidas after four months of high-intensity training. The role made full use of his imposing physicality and forceful delivery, qualities he later carried into films including Law Abiding Citizen, Olympus Has Fallen and its sequels, Hunter Killer and Greenland. He also co-produced Law Abiding Citizen. Yet Butler’s work has never belonged solely to live-action spectacle. As Stoick the Vast in the How to Train Your Dragon films, his voice performance found authority, humour and paternal tenderness in equal measure. Across stage, television, animation, romance and action, Butler’s career has been shaped less by one fixed persona than by his willingness to throw himself into distinctly different kinds of movie storytelling.
