Biography

About Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges has built a career around an ease that can be deceptive. He often appears relaxed on screen, but his performances can carry melancholy, danger, humour, or bruised dignity without advertising the work behind them. Born in Los Angeles on December 4, 1949, Bridges grew up in an acting family. His father was actor Lloyd Bridges, his mother was actress and writer Dorothy Bridges, and his older brother Beau also became an actor. Jeff and Beau appeared occasionally on their father’s television series Sea Hunt and The Lloyd Bridges Show, giving Jeff an unusually early introduction to performing for the camera. His first major film role came in Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The 1970s quickly established his range, from John Huston’s gritty boxing drama Fat City to Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and the 1976 remake of King Kong. Bridges became equally comfortable in ambitious genre films and intimate character pieces. He played programmer Kevin Flynn in Tron, an alien visitor in John Carpenter’s Starman, and an automobile entrepreneur in Francis Ford Coppola’s Tucker: The Man and His Dream. The Fabulous Baker Boys placed him opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and alongside Beau Bridges, while Fearless gave him one of his most searching dramatic roles. Then came Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski in the Coen brothers’ The Big Lebowski, a performance whose loose rhythm and dry humour became inseparable from the film. Bridges later reunited with the Coens as Rooster Cogburn in True Grit, receiving another Academy Award nomination. His work as an alcoholic country singer in Crazy Heart brought him the Academy Award for Best Actor, as well as Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards. He earned a seventh Oscar nomination for Hell or High Water, playing a Texas Ranger approaching retirement. Since 2022, he has led the FX drama thriller The Old Man, continuing a screen career defined less by reinvention than by an enduring ability to make complicated men feel lived-in.
