Biography

About Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has spent most of his life on screen, but his career is defined less by longevity than by a willingness to keep changing the terms. Born in Los Angeles in 1981 and raised in Sherman Oaks, he began performing in musical theatre at four before moving into television, commercials and film. His six-season role as Tommy Solomon on 3rd Rock from the Sun made him a familiar face, while 10 Things I Hate About You placed him firmly within a defining wave of late-1990s teen movies. Rather than remain in that lane, Gordon-Levitt moved toward thornier material. Manic, Mysterious Skin and Brick gave him characters whose inner lives mattered more than easy likability. As Brendan Frye in Brick, he carried a high-school noir with a cool, tightly controlled performance that helped establish the adult phase of his career. The Lookout further demonstrated how effective he could be as a restrained leading man. He has since moved comfortably between intimate drama and large-scale studio filmmaking. In 500 Days of Summer, he played romantic enthusiasm and disappointment without smoothing over the character’s blind spots. Inception and The Dark Knight Rises brought him into Christopher Nolan’s ambitious blockbusters, while Looper asked him to share a character with Bruce Willis across two points in time. Other prominent roles include a bicycle messenger in Premium Rush, Philippe Petit in The Walk, Edward Snowden in Snowden and lawyer Richard Schultz in The Trial of the Chicago 7. Gordon-Levitt’s interest in filmmaking extends beyond acting. He adapted an Elmore Leonard story for the short film Sparks, later wrote, directed and starred in Don Jon, and created the collaborative media platform HitRecord. He also wrote, directed, starred in and executive produced the comedy-drama series Mr. Corman. That range—from sitcom timing and minimalist drama to action films and work behind the camera—has made his career unusually difficult to reduce to a single type.
