Kevin James

Kevin James built his screen career around a particularly sturdy kind of comedy: physical without being weightless, broad without losing the ordinary frustrations underneath. Born Kevin George Knipfing in Mineola, New York, on April 26, 1965, he began performing stand-up in 1989 at the East Side Comedy Club on Long Island. That live-comedy foundation—timing, improvisation and an instinct for turning minor discomfort into a full-scale crisis—would remain central to his work. After television appearances that included Everybody Loves Raymond, James found his defining sitcom role as parcel delivery driver Doug Heffernan in The King of Queens. Running from 1998 to 2007, the series gave him room to play stubbornness, embarrassment and domestic chaos over the long haul. His eighth-season performance earned a 2006 Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. James moved into movies with a cameo in 50 First Dates before making his starring film debut opposite Will Smith and Eva Mendes in Hitch. As Albert Brennaman, he was a natural fit for a romantic comedy built around social anxiety and ungainly confidence. Paul Blart: Mall Cop later placed his physical comedy at the center of a starring vehicle, while Here Comes the Boom cast him as a teacher entering mixed martial arts. His film work also includes collaborations with Adam Sandler in I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Grown Ups and Sandy Wexler, along with lead roles in Zookeeper and The Dilemma. His voice work in Monster House, Barnyard and the first three Hotel Transylvania films expanded that comic persona into animation. James has also stepped outside his familiar register, notably taking a lead dramatic role in the 2020 thriller Becky and portraying NFL head coach Sean Payton in Home Team. Alongside television series including Kevin Can Wait and The Crew, he has continued returning to stand-up, releasing specials in 2001, 2018 and 2024.
