Biography

About Kim Basinger

Kim Basinger has built a screen career around an intriguing tension: the polished composure of a former model set against a capacity for vulnerability, uncertainty and quiet resolve. Born in Athens, Georgia, on December 8, 1953, she studied ballet as a child and later worked as a Ford model in New York, while also taking acting classes and performing as a singer in Greenwich Village clubs. In 1976, she left modelling and moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. After early television appearances and her feature debut in the rural drama Hard Country, Basinger gained worldwide attention opposite Sean Connery as Domino Petachi in Never Say Never Again. The 1980s gave her a strikingly varied run: she appeared in The Natural, Robert Altman's Fool for Love, Adrian Lyne's 9½ Weeks and Blake Edwards's Blind Date before playing photojournalist Vicki Vale opposite Michael Keaton in Tim Burton's Batman. These films used her glamour, but her best performances have often revealed something more complicated beneath it. That quality was central to her role as Lynn Bracken in Curtis Hanson's L.A. Confidential. Returning to the screen after a mid-1990s hiatus, Basinger played the high-class sex worker with a carefully guarded inner life. The performance earned her the Academy Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for supporting actress. Basinger continued to move between studio pictures and more intimate dramas. She played the troubled mother of an aspiring rapper in 8 Mile, a grieving wife in The Door in the Floor, a resourceful hostage in Cellular and the First Lady in The Sentinel. Later roles included The Burning Plain, Charlie St. Cloud, Grudge Match, The Nice Guys and the Fifty Shades sequels. Across thrillers, romances, noir, comedy and drama, Basinger's presence has rarely depended on sheer display. Her work is most compelling when elegance becomes a kind of cover—something her characters maintain until fear, longing or hard-earned defiance begins to show through.
