Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson’s career has never stayed neatly in one lane. Born in Peekskill, New York, on January 3, 1956, he moved with his family to Australia at 12 and later studied at Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Art. His early experience included stage work as well as Australian film and television, giving him a foundation that extended beyond the action roles that first made him widely known. After making his film debut in Summer City, Gibson took the title role in Mad Max in 1979. George Miller’s film established the hard-edged screen presence that would follow him into Mad Max 2 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Peter Weir’s Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously showed a more dramatic side, while Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon cemented Gibson’s standing as a Hollywood leading man and action star. He did not remain confined to that image. Gibson played the title role in Franco Zeffirelli’s Hamlet, leaned into comedy with Maverick and What Women Want, and provided the speaking and singing voice of John Smith in Pocahontas. Across the 1990s, films including Ransom, Conspiracy Theory and Payback kept him firmly in commercial cinema while he developed a parallel career behind the camera. Gibson made his directorial debut with The Man Without a Face in 1993. Braveheart followed in 1995 and earned him the Academy Award for Best Director. He later directed The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto, Hacksaw Ridge and Flight Risk, pursuing large-scale stories that often placed characters under extreme physical or spiritual pressure. His work has also included producing and screenwriting. The course of Gibson’s career has not been uncomplicated: controversial public statements contributed to a decline in his popularity. Even so, his filmography traces an unusually broad path through Australian genre filmmaking, Hollywood action, comedy, historical drama, voice acting, producing and directing.
