Biography

About Rose Byrne

Rose Byrne has built a career around an unusually flexible screen presence. She can play tightly controlled, quietly troubled or completely ridiculous without making any of those modes feel like a detour. That range has carried the Australian actress from local film and television to Hollywood thrillers, studio comedies, voice work and the stage. Born in Balmain, Sydney, on 24 July 1979, Byrne began attending the Australian Theatre for Young People at eight and landed her first film role in Dallas Doll at 15. After appearances in Australian television and films including Two Hands and My Mother Frank, she took her first leading role in Clara Law’s The Goddess of 1967. The performance won her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice International Film Festival. International roles followed in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Troy, Marie Antoinette, Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later. On television, Byrne found a substantial dramatic showcase as attorney Ellen Parsons in Damages, appearing in all 59 episodes and receiving Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. The welcome surprise was how naturally comedy suited her. After years of heavier material, Byrne actively sought comic roles and played an outrageous pop star in Get Him to the Greek. Bridesmaids, Neighbours and Spy confirmed her ability to be funny without sacrificing character; she often makes composure itself part of the joke, then lets the cracks appear at exactly the right moment. Her film work has continued to move easily between tones and scales, from Insidious and The Place Beyond the Pines to X-Men: First Class, Juliet, Naked and Peter Rabbit. She has also worked as a voice actor in I Am Mother, Jexi and Bluey, while maintaining a stage career that includes Three Sisters and Medea. In 2025, Byrne returned to demanding dramatic territory as a troubled mother in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. The performance earned her the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at Berlin and further major awards recognition, underlining a career shaped less by one fixed persona than by a willingness to keep changing the temperature.
