Emma Watson grew up on screen, but the appeal of her career lies in how deliberately she has tried to move beyond that beginning. Born in Paris on 15 April 1990, she moved to England at five and trained in singing, dancing and acting at the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts from the age of six. Before Harry Potter, her experience came from school plays and Stagecoach productions rather than professional acting. That changed with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001. As Hermione Granger, Watson brought earnestness, intelligence and a forceful streak to a character who became more assertive as the series continued. She nearly left the franchise after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, uneasy about the scale of the commitment, but ultimately stayed through Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
