Biography

About Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes has built a screen career around an interesting tension: the approachable warmth that first brought her national attention and a willingness to play characters with sharper, messier edges. Born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1978, Holmes was the youngest of five children. She began taking modelling classes at 14 and later signed with an agent after performing a monologue from To Kill a Mockingbird. Her film debut came in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm, where she played Libbets Casey opposite Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver. Television soon made her widely known. Holmes won the role of Joey Potter in Dawson’s Creek after submitting an audition tape filmed in her basement, with her mother reading the other lines. She remained with the series for its entire 128-episode run, giving her early career a strong centre even as she moved into movies. Those film roles quickly showed she wasn't interested in simply repeating Joey Potter. She played a rebellious outsider in Disturbing Behavior, a disaffected supermarket clerk in Doug Liman’s Go, and appeared in Curtis Hanson’s Wonder Boys and Sam Raimi’s The Gift. Pieces of April gave Holmes one of her most substantial early film showcases: as April, she played a difficult young woman attempting to hold together a precarious family Thanksgiving. The performance earned her a Satellite Award for Best Actress. Larger productions followed, including Phone Booth, First Daughter, Batman Begins and Thank You for Smoking. Holmes also kept moving between formats. She made her Broadway debut in a 2008 revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, later appearing in Dead Accounts, the Off-Broadway play The Wanderers and the 2024 Broadway revival of Our Town. Her career eventually expanded behind the camera. After directing the ESPN short documentary Eternal Princess, Holmes made her feature-directing debut with All We Had, in which she also starred as a struggling single mother. She later wrote, directed and acted in Alone Together, then directed and appeared in Rare Objects. That progression—from television breakout to film actor, stage performer, writer and director—has given Holmes a career shaped less by one defining role than by a steady interest in trying another angle.
