Maggie Grace

Maggie Grace has built a screen career that moves easily between television dramas, studio thrillers, literary adaptations and horror. Born Margaret Grace Denig on September 21, 1983, in Worthington, Ohio, she began acting in school plays and community theatre. A keen reader and self-described “Shakespeare nerd,” she was also drawn early to Jane Austen—a connection that would later find its way into her film work. After relocating to Los Angeles, Grace quickly found an agent, enrolled in acting classes and made her screen debut in the 2001 web series Rachel’s Room. Her early breakthrough came with the television movie Murder in Greenwich, in which she portrayed Martha Moxley. The performance earned her a Young Artist Award nomination and was followed by appearances in series including CSI: Miami, Cold Case and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. For many viewers, Grace arrived fully with Lost. Cast as Shannon Rutherford after auditioning for the pilot, she brought a brittle, guarded quality to a character whose vulnerability gradually emerged. Grace appeared across the first two seasons, later returning for a third-season guest spot and the series finale. Her work also earned a Teen Choice Award nomination for female breakout performance. Film gave her room to range. She starred in the 2005 remake of The Fog, played Allegra in The Jane Austen Book Club and appeared opposite Liam Neeson in the 2008 thriller Taken. Other projects include the modern Lewis Carroll adaptation Malice in Wonderland, Knight and Day, Faster and the two parts of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, in which she played Irina. Grace has continued to alternate between film, television and the stage. She made her Broadway debut in Picnic, guest-starred on Californication and joined Fear the Walking Dead in 2018 as journalist Althea. Across those roles, her career has resisted being pinned to one genre, shifting from large ensemble stories to thrillers and character-led drama without losing the alert, direct presence that first made Shannon stand out.
