Ray Liotta

Ray Liotta brought a distinctive mix of charm, volatility and vulnerability to the screen. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on December 18, 1954, he studied acting at the University of Miami and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1978. After graduation, he moved to New York City, worked as a bartender and found an agent within six months. An early recurring role as Joey Perrini on Another World gave him his first sustained television work before he headed to Los Angeles. His first major film role came in Something Wild, earning him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The performance established something Liotta would return to throughout his career: an ability to make danger feel immediate without losing sight of the person underneath it. He could shift registers just as effectively. In Field of Dreams, he played the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson with a quiet, elusive presence; one year later, he took centre stage as real-life mobster Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. Liotta’s filmography repeatedly drew on his natural intensity. He played a psychopathic police officer in Unlawful Entry, a compulsive gambler in Phoenix and a hardened detective in Narc, which brought him an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Cop Land, Hannibal, Identity, Smokin’ Aces, Killing Them Softly and The Iceman placed him in morally compromised worlds where his gravelly voice and watchful manner could do plenty of work before a character revealed his intentions. His range extended beyond crime films. Liotta voiced Tommy Vercetti in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, won an Emmy for his guest appearance on ER and starred opposite Jennifer Lopez in Shades of Blue. In Marriage Story, he found a sharp comic edge as divorce attorney Jay Marotta. He later played twin brothers Hollywood Dick and Sally Moltisanti in The Many Saints of Newark and appeared in Cocaine Bear, released in 2023 and dedicated to his memory. Liotta died in 2022, leaving behind a career built not on one fixed persona, but on the tension between menace, humour and bruised humanity.
