Robin Wright

Robin Wright has built a screen career around poise, restraint and an ability to suggest far more than a character is willing to say. Born in Dallas on April 8, 1966, and raised in Southern California, she began modeling at 14 before finding an early television showcase as Kelly Capwell on the NBC daytime soap Santa Barbara. She played the role from age 18 to 22 and received several Daytime Emmy Award nominations. Feature films soon gave Wright a different kind of space. After appearing in Hollywood Vice Squad, she broke through as Princess Buttercup in The Princess Bride, a performance that remains central to the film’s cult appeal. As Jenny Curran in Forrest Gump, she brought a complicated emotional history to a role that earned her Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations. Leading work in Moll Flanders and Message in a Bottle followed, while films such as She’s So Lovely, Nine Lives and Sorry, Haters reflected her continued interest in independent projects. She also moved comfortably into supporting roles in Unbreakable, Moneyball and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Wright’s gift for controlled intensity found one of its strongest outlets in House of Cards. As Claire Underwood, she turned calculation and stillness into sources of tension across the political drama’s six seasons, eventually becoming the show’s lead for its final season. The performance made her the first actress to win a Golden Globe for a streaming television series and brought her six Primetime Emmy nominations for the same role. Her later film work has moved between large-scale productions and more intimate material. She played General Antiope in Wonder Woman and its sequel, appeared in Blade Runner 2049 and joined the ensemble of Everest. With Land, Wright made her feature directorial debut while also starring as Edee Mathis, a grieving lawyer who retreats into the Wyoming wilderness. She has continued working on both sides of the camera, directing episodes of Ozark and later starring in and producing Devil’s Peak. Roles in Damsel and Here followed, with Here reuniting her with Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis, actor Tom Hanks and writer Eric Roth. In 2025, she again combined acting and directing on the limited series The Girlfriend, earning Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominations for her performance.
