Val Kilmer

Born in Los Angeles on December 31, 1959, Val Kilmer built a career around transformation. He worked across film, television, theatre and voice acting, moving between broad comedy, action spectacle, westerns and character-driven drama without settling into one screen identity. Kilmer became the youngest person at the time accepted into the Juilliard School’s Drama Division. His early stage work included the 1983 off-Broadway production of The Slab Boys, while his film breakthrough came with the spy-movie spoof Top Secret! He played rock star Nick Rivers, sang the character’s songs and followed the role with the lead in Real Genius. Top Gun made him a major star as naval aviator Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, a performance built on cool restraint and controlled rivalry. Yet some of Kilmer’s most distinctive work came when he pushed further into a character. For The Doors, he memorized Jim Morrison’s lyrics, studied his poetry and recorded the band’s songs; members of the Doors found his singing difficult to distinguish from Morrison’s. As Doc Holliday in Tombstone, Kilmer found wit, menace and physical fragility in the same performance. He even practiced a Chopin nocturne for months for the film. His 1990s roles showed his range: Elvis Presley in True Romance, armed robber Chris Shiherlis in Heat, the title role in Batman Forever and master of disguise Simon Templar in The Saint. He also voiced both Moses and God in The Prince of Egypt. Later films included The Salton Sea, Spartan, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Déjà Vu and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Kilmer continued returning to the stage, including his one-man show Citizen Twain, which became the film Cinema Twain and marked his directorial debut. In 2022, he reprised Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick, bringing his career back to one of its defining roles. The documentary Val, released in 2021, chronicled his career and health struggles. Kilmer died in 2025, leaving behind a body of work shaped by unusual choices, intensive preparation and a willingness to keep changing form.
